The Ukrainian Scientific Diaspora in Spain has organized a series of events bringing together Ukrainian researchers to foster professional networking and collaboration. These activities aim to strengthen scientific cooperation, support research engagement, and build a connected scholarly community between Ukraine and Spain.

1st Ukrainian-European Science Diplomacy Forum in Vienna, Austria

On March 12, 2026 Ukrainian Science Diaspora in Spain was presented in the 1st Ukrainian-European Science Diplomacy Forum in Vienna, Austria. The event assembled more than 100 participants from 12 countries, representing over 60 academic, governmental, and international institutions, including representatives of the National Research Foundation of Ukraine, the President of Ukraine’s Fund for the Support of Education, Science and Sports, Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs and the Federal Ministry for Women, Science and Research (Austria).

It further brought together contributors from UNESCO and the EU Science Diplomacy Alliance, as well as representatives of Ukrainian science diaspora networks from Austria, Germany, the Czech Republic, Switzerland, and Spain.

Galyna Ryabukha, Institutional Relations Coordinator in the Ukrainian Science Diaspora in Spain, participated in the Panel 1: Displaced but not Disconnected: Ukrainian Science Diaspora as a Strategic Bridge in Europe. She presented activities implemented together with Horkovchuk Iuliia, Kateryna Khvostenko, and Iryna Kohut in the framework of Science Diplomacy, in particulary Info Day “Into to Science Diplomacy” (October 2025), networking activity RAICEX (December 2025), Info Day dedicated to the 4th anniversary of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine (February 2026). These initiatives are strong examples of science diplomacy as they connect Ukrainian academic community with European institutions, promote international collaboration, and strengthen the role of the diaspora as a bridge between countries.

Overall, the Forum highlighted the growing strategic importance of the Ukrainian Science Diaspora as an active contributor to European research and policy dialogue. The participation of the Ukrainian Science Diaspora in Spain demonstrated how targeted science diplomacy initiatives can sustain international collaboration, amplify Ukraine’s scientific presence abroad, and foster resilient partnerships.

Goal and impact:

We provide the information on research job and funding opportunities, on administrative procedures that affect researchers when moving to a Spain, as well as some resources to support your professional development. EURAXESS Spain is part of a European Commission initiative made up of a network is of more than 500 European Services Centres in 40 different countries that provide free of charge assistance to researchers and their families in matters such as visas, recognition of diplomas, social security and any other legal and cultural aspect.

We would like to discuss challenges in science that arose because of the Russian-Ukrainian war and ways to overcome them. On the one hand, the challenges that Ukrainian scientists are overcoming today are unique and valuable for the entire scientific community in the world. On the other hand, science is the key to the successful recovery of Ukraine. With the support of the community Science at Risk, we would like to open ways for Ukrainian scientists in Spain to participate in this discussion.

Ways to integrate Ukrainian scientists into the international scientific community

On February 15, 2024, the first meeting of Ukrainian scientists in Spain "Ways to integrate Ukrainian scientists into the international scientific community" was held. The meeting was organized by Ukrainian scientists at the Polytechnic University of Valencia - Julia Horkovchuk and Kateryna Khvostenko.

The event was supported by the Polytechnic University of Valencia, the Honorary Consulate of Ukraine in Valencia, the Council of Young Scientists of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine and the Ukrainian Scientific Diaspora

Special thanks for their participation and support to the Honorary Ambassador of Ukraine in Valencia, Mr. Pablo Gil, Vice-Rector for Arts, Sciences and Technology of the Polytechnic University of Valencia, Ms. María Salomé Cuesta Valera, and co-founder of the strategic initiative "Ukrainian Science Diaspora", Ms. Yevhenia Polishchuk

During the meeting, Professor Alfred Peris of the Polytechnic University of Valencia shared his experience and opportunities for international cooperation. Ms. Valeria Gorlushko, Linkedin Coach, gave a very informative lecture on the possibilities of the Linkedin platform for scientists.
